The term “Sunday Scaries” began building traction on social media platforms as many in the workforce began to publicly address the real fear of returning to work the next day after a weekend away from job demands and responsibilities. For most working associates, Sunday is the dreaded day that brings an end to one’s weekend freedoms. Work stress, feeling overwhelmed, and the avoidance of such concerns has led to many feeling burnt out and anxious to return to work to start a fresh, new week.

Exercise increases your overall health and your sense of well-being, which puts more pep in your step every day. In addition to this, exercise helps pump up your endorphins, which in turn helps to combat stress. Start with a small yet effective exercise routine of 30 minutes of physical activity at least 3 days a week. Maybe grab a family member of a friend to join you for a little bit of accountability as you get started, and exercise together!
When the “Sunday Scaries” start creeping in, you may struggle to feel grounded. “Sunday Scaries”, like anxiety, create a fight or flight response, an automatic physiological reaction to events that are perceived as stressful or frightening. In these moments, mindfulness helps you address anxious and negative thoughts without becoming too invested and overwhelmed by them. Meditative breathing practices are a great way to practice mindfulness– and it’s likely that your smart watch has an app to guide you through them. Some of our Dawson colleagues practice mindfulness through daily reflection journals like “Calm the Chaos Journal: A Daily Practice for a More Better Life,” and it only takes about 5 minutes a day to build into your routine.
Just as you reward yourself for large accomplishments or crushing your goals, set rewards for yourself each day of the work week. Who says you can enjoy a weekday, too?! Maybe it’s a fruity smoothie from a local juice shop, an evening stroll through nature, or a quick episode of your comfort show. Whatever it is, allow yourself to have some grace and reward yourself each day for the work that you are putting forth and create a more positive work-life balance.
It may be *spooky season* but not all Sundays have to be scary. When you have something enjoyable to look forward to, it increases a feeling of optimism, combating that end of weekend anxietities. Having plans on a Sunday (of course depending on your free time and schedule) gives you something to look forward to as your weekend comes to a close. One of our Dawson colleagues suggested grabbing coffee at a local shop and browsing nearby bookstores. Another suggested making brunch reservations with a group of your closest friends. Your “Sunday Funday” plans should feel refreshing and fun, and should never make you feel overwhelmed.
This may be some tough advice to follow, but if the “Sunday Scaries” are becoming a routine Sunday detriment, it may be time to reconsider a new job that you might be happier at.
