Even though I am no longer in a recruiting role here at
Dawson, my family, friends and friends of friends are continuously asking me for resume advice or to look over their information before sending it to an employer. I have found myself giving the same advice, saying the same things, making similar corrections and using parallel examples to explain things.
Here is what I have found to be a pattern in my recommendations:
- Don’t use your resume to tell your story in detail; that is what a cover letter is for. Make your information/bullet points underneath your job title “short, sweet and to the point.” Don’t sell yourself short, but highlight your accomplishments in so many words. (You can also use a
video resume to tell your story...)
- Format is everything. The phrase “Only seconds are spent on a resume” is true, so be sure your format is set so an employer knows exactly where to look in order...
