Interview Follow-up – What is Appropriate?

By GHalligan on 4/20/2012 3:22 PM
After an interview, most job seekers will be pegged with the following questions:

Should I send an email saying thank you or a handwritten card?

If I don’t hear from them, when should I follow up?

How should I check in? Email or phone?

These are all natural and normal questions!   So lets get to answering them, shall we?

You should ALWAYS send a handwritten thank you card to EVERY person you sat down and interviewed with.  In a perfect world, you will receive a business card from your interviewers and should thank each and every one of them for their time.  If you didn’t get contact information, quickly write down or remember the person’s first name for the name to address on the envelope.   I am not saying emails are wrong and if you would like to follow-up via email right away, go for it, but also send a card.

It is good to look eager and interested in the role you have interviewed for, but not too eager.  Give the employer a couple days to breath, review and make...

Interview Questions – How to Answer

By GHalligan on 4/12/2012 5:18 PM
For all job seekers out there, old and new, the opportunity for a job interview is both exciting and a little nerve racking.   You do your duties of reviewing the company website, walk through your resume, study the job description and prepare yourself for answers to some common interview questions.

Some tips:

Why should I hire you?   This question can cause you to freeze because you don’t know what topic you should touch upon; personality, skill set, experience?  This situation is the perfect example of why you should read through the job description you’re applying for and make your own set of notes on the side.  Highlight that you have experience in the published “job requirements” and concentrate on the responsibilities in your potential new role and say how you’ve done them in the past and really enjoyed them.  Finally, bring a new idea to the table “I was reading over the job description and I really think my past experience in XYZ could apply and improve this role.”  Marvelous! Coming to...

Interviewing: Wardrobe Check!

By GHalligan on 2/10/2012 10:56 AM
The question of “what is appropriate to wear to an interview” is one asked by every type of job seeker (young and old) and it’s important to pay attention to detail.  Whether you’re interviewing at a CPA firm or an ad agency that wears jeans every day, it’s important to overdress for your main entrance.

Let’s start at the top, shall we?

Hair

Women – If your hair is down, make sure it’s brushed, styled and obvious that you showered.  If the hair is up, avoid the “messy look” and make the hairspray your friend; take that extra 5 to impress your interviewer.

Men – Make sure you have a fresh haircut or be sure those longer locks are styled to perfection.

Clothing

Ladies & Gentlemen – All clothing should be fitted, ironed, tucked in (if the style calls for it) and of proper length.  Ladies, nothing too low-cut either; let’s keep it professional!

I’m not saying you have to throw on a suit, but make sure what you are wearing looks its best.  Taking time on...

Interview Protocol 101

By GHalligan on 1/6/2012 3:22 PM
Whether you’re a first time job seeker or deep into your career, it helps to “refresh” our brains of the basics when it comes to interviewing for a job.  Some tips?

Arrival:  Show up to your interview 5-10 minutes early.  Anything more or less than this is running the risk of looking too eager or unorganized.

Cell Phones/Pagers/Laptops:  Doesn’t matter if you’re in your interview or sitting in the lobby, you are not to pay attention to any technology.  Silence (better yet, turn off) all of your gadgets before you even enter the building.  You can be unconnected from the outside world and commit your time to your interviewer…they are doing the same for you!

Beverage in Hand: Do not (I repeat, do not) bring your morning java into an interview.  First off, it’s distracting and second, If you can’t part with your daily jolt for an interview, what does that say about your priorities?  Actions speak louder than words…food for thought.

Eye Contact: Be confident, but not cocky.  Maintaining...

Interview Tips: What to Ask?

By GHalligan on 11/30/2011 11:44 AM
Interview Tips - Asking Questions

Be prepared to ask questions of the hiring manager during the interview that are based on your research of the company and industry. Insightful and pertinent questions will demonstrate that you've done your homework and that you're serious about the position. And your questions will help both of you determine if you are the right match for the job. A good idea is to review the website prior to your interview. Know what questions NOT to ask. Don't inquire about salary, vacation time, PTO, benefits, working remotely, or your office space at the first interview. These questions are appropriate only after the hiring manager has expressed serious interest in offering you the position. Here are some questions you might ask:

·         What would I be expected to accomplish in this role?

·         What is the current status of the project/assignment?

·         What are the greatest challenges in this position?

·         How do you think...

Interview Prep

By GHalligan on 8/10/2011 1:21 PM
If you’re interviewing for the first time out of college or deep into your career, being prepared for an interview is key to landing your dream job!

Here are some questions that might help get the “juices flowing” before walking into an interview:

1.       Can you tell me about a situation that really tested your patience?

2.       When was the last time that you tried a new idea to improve your work performance?

3.       When you have worked on a team, and your role was crucial, what was that role? In what way was this team effort different or similar to working on your own?

4.       Can you tell me about a time when you did something extra, which was not part of your routine activities assigned to you?

5.       Explain a recent mistake.  What did you learn from it and in what areas can you utilize that knowledge in the future?

What other questions have you come across in past interviews??

Recruiter Q & A

By GHalligan on 7/22/2011 3:35 PM
I was personally asked several questions about interviewing this week that I assumed everyone knew the answer to…

Q: What color nail polish should I wear?

A: A very subtle pink or a nude color.

Q: Should I write Thank You notes to everyone I talked to, or just the people who gave me their business cards?

A: With the assumption that you don’t have the contact information of those who didn’t give you business cards, the people who gave you their info are enough!

Q: What kind of stationary should I use to write my Thank You notes?

A:  I would make it your basic stationary with “Thank You” on the inside or outside of the card.  Personally more “fluffy” stationary shouldn’t be used for a professional transaction.

Q: Should I follow up next week to check my status?

A: Even after a Thank You note, I always find is wise to shoot over and email saying thank you, again, and stating your high interest in the position.  From there,...
