For all job seekers out there, old and new, the opportunity for a job interview is both exciting and a little nerve racking. You do your duties of reviewing the company website, walk through your resume, study the job description and prepare yourself for answers to some common interview questions.
Some tips:
Why should I hire you? This question can cause you to freeze because you don’t know what topic you should touch upon; personality, skill set, experience? This situation is the perfect example of why you should read through the job description you’re applying for and make your own set of notes on the side. Highlight that you have experience in the published “job requirements” and concentrate on the responsibilities in your potential new role and say how you’ve done them in the past and really enjoyed them. Finally, bring a new idea to the table “I was reading over the job description and I really think my past experience in XYZ could apply and improve this role.” Marvelous! Coming to...

These may seem like simple and obvious suggestions, but sometimes going back to basics can help remind us what our original goal was…to get a job!
-Always bring multiple copies of your resume to an interview. Not only will the person conducting your interview need one, but if you meet with more than one person in the company, it’s good for them to have their own personal copy as well. Remember, the goal of an interview is to be remembered and to stick out!
-A cover letter isn’t always necessary for a job application, but having one in your back pocket is a good call. Applying to jobs (especially online) is time consuming and you don’t want to push the “pause button” due to not having a cover letter ready and waiting!
-References: Have them, let the person know you’re listing them and make sure their contact information is up-to-date. That is all.
-Thank you cards: this gesture is still powerful. Handwritten cards are good, but leaving the interview and putting them in the mail...

With the summer months upon us, it is hard to catch people when they are actually in the office. While this can be frustrating, don’t let that slow down your job search and staying connected with your recruiter!
Make sure to not only call, but email your recruiter as well. While they may not be answering phone calls or emails at that time, they will still see your efforts and make sure to sit down and reply to you when they return to their desk. More often than not, you will get a “reply” stating who you can contact for immediate assistance. If you’re waiting on feedback or have a question, reach out to that “for immediate assistance” person; effort and follow up is recognized and then shared!
The best thing to do is to stay on the minds of those who can suggest you for positions!

When you decide that it’s time to look for a job, what steps do you take? Do you go onto job boards, start searching and submit your resume? Do you ask around to your friends and family to see if they know someone hiring in your field?
How about using a Staffing Agency? There are many rumors that surround using Staffing as a means to get a job. I am here to help settle those rumors.
- - It costs money to go through an agency.
o FALSE. Going through a Temp Agency is totally free for the job seeker. No hidden fees when you receive your first paycheck, “one-time payment”, it’s totally FREE!
- - Staffing Firms only offer temporary/short –term work.
o FALSE. Dawson offers temporary, temp-to-perm, contract and direct hire jobs.
- - I have had horrible experiences with other agencies.
o While it’s unfortunate that there are some bad seeds out there (with every business),...

The long Holiday weekend is upon us and some people make the mistake of taking a vacation from their job search. Hiring managers may be able to take an extra day out of the office, but this means recruiters are going to be in full swing and feeling the heat to fill positions when they return to the office. Staffing Agencies don’t sleep (it’s a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week commitment – take it from me!) and looking for the perfect candidate for a client does not stop…ever.
Take a vacation, but not too long of a break from your job search. Stay on top of your online research, check in first thing with your recruiter and have that resume ready!
Dawson wishes all of you a great Memorial Day weekend!

Even though I am no longer in a recruiting role here at Dawson, my family, friends and friends of friends are continuously asking me for resume advice or to look over their information before sending it to an employer. I have found myself giving the same advice, saying the same things, making similar corrections and using parallel examples to explain things.
Here is what I have found to be a pattern in my recommendations:
- Don’t use your resume to tell your story in detail; that is what a cover letter is for. Make your information/bullet points underneath your job title “short, sweet and to the point.” Don’t sell yourself short, but highlight your accomplishments in so many words. (You can also use a video resume to tell your story...)
- Format is everything. The phrase “Only seconds are spent on a resume” is true, so be sure your format is set so an employer knows exactly where to look in order...
